We are recognised distributors with engineering supply and dedication which is second-to-none. founder Mr WG Townley was a refugee from Nazi Germany who went onto serve in the REME (Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers) in North Africa and Europe during WWII. He launched the business in 1946, whilst still continuing his electronics education under the guidance of professors at The University of Manchester. The business made significant progress in semi-conductor supply – going on to become the first and at the time only worldwide Westcode distributor– and over the decades providing hundreds of jobs.
To this day we are proud to have one of the largest stocks of Westcode Power Semiconductors and Bussman and GEC semiconductor fuses in the UK, and are also honoured to be the UK distributor of Hind Rectifiers.
Providing those hard-to-find components is something we specialise in; with a personal service throughout. Personally picking, packaging and dispatching your order matters to us – in the fastest possible time for your convenience. We’re even adding a small gift with each order – an eco-friendly bit of fun, thanks to our ‘Eco-Life Gizmos’ range – from June 2016 onwards.
Our frequently updated stock includes a variety of diodes, thyristors and fuses for range of industrial uses. Clamps, leads, sleeves, heatsinks and heat-sink compounds are also available. Some of our worldwide customers also ask us to source other items for them, as they trust our personal approach and reliability.
Other areas of provision include solid state relays, IGBTs and varistors. A number of rectifier services are also available; which include rectifier assembly, bridges and hardware components: with Westcode Rectifier stacks built to order.
We also have an extensive stock of IR-Vishay semiconductors and many obsolete devices too. We can source from manufacturers including Semikron, Infineon, Eupec, Mitsubishi, Lawson and Ferraz. Brand quality matters to us.
We stock a huge standard range of components as well as obsolete items, enabling fast turnaround, and all products are frequently updated. With an extensive client base, many of our customers have been returning to us for years – from areas including power generation, telecommunications, transportation and aviation. That is not all; for we also have connections in farms, funfairs, sugar mills, launderettes, garden centres, university research departments, schools and colleges – there is no limit!
Our Range is extensive and regularly updated, always keeping ‘engineering support’ in mind, with a wide range of semiconductors in stock. This includes but is not limited to diodes (with a range of specifications available), thyristors, fuses, varistors, leads, solid state relays, IGBTs, power modules and rectifier bridges.
Obviously stocks change every day but a snapshot shows 2500 lines and almost half a million items in stock. Browse away or give our team a call.
On the rare occasions where we don’t have what you need we will do everything in our power to source alternatives for you, even when that means having them made specially.
Our staff although all specialists in their own areas are very adaptable and during their service have learned about all areas of the business – so we’ll always be there for you even when one of us is on holiday or away.
You can continue to rely on our long established name and fantastic track record of supporting engineering industries since 1946. Our internal quality systems go above and beyond the ISO requirements – we think the quality of our goods and service matters for every single quote, order and item and is not just down to a tick in a box or a report on a shelf. Our passion for engineering and aligning our customers with the components needed matters to us. Since the death of the founder Mr Townley in 2003, daughter Clare has taken over the family business, with a commitment to engineering support, distribution and customer service.
She also helped to establish the Townley Family Community Cohesion Fund with The Community Foundation For Calderdale – to support local community groups and charities to eliminate the racism and prejudice which dominated her Father’s early life.

Meet the team
Our staff maintain an essential link with our customers providing them with a wealth of expertise and continuity of service one would expect from a family firm with 70 years of trading history. They recognise the importance of communicating efficiently and customers can be certain that when you contact Harmsworth, Townley & Co. Ltd you will be dealing with someone who is sympathetic to your needs and a real person rather than just an automated voice.
A Maths (with French) graduate with an MSc in Operational Research, and a qualified Higher Education Teacher, Clare Townley took over the business in 2003. Since then she has relocated the business to new custom designed award winning environmental premises, integrated a new IT and Management Information System and invested heavily in Internet trading.
An analyst at heart, Clare has managed to redefine strategic mix of the company putting the customer and the environment at the centre of her business ethos. She thinks all children should learn about ‘One World Living’ – not using more than our fair share of resources – so particularly enjoys seeing children delight in our renewable energy and eco gizmos.
‘Glen and I are delighted that our oldest 2 children are studying science at Oxford and London Universities – our passion for science education must have rubbed off’.
Clare can sometimes be found singing in the Todmorden Choral Society or playing her horn ‘Humphrey’ in Todmorden Community Brass: when she’s not too busy finding fuses, packaging pieces and searching the store cupboard – as a personal, productive service matters greatly.
A keen town Twinner, Clare has also connected with French and German students who have enjoyed work experience at The Melting Pot.

Married to the Managing Director for since 1990, Glen has been with the company since the last Millennium working as the accountant and operations manager. As the company has developed he has taken on the role of managing the renewables side of the business. He is passionate about educating the younger generation in science and engineering so loves demonstrating our gizmos! He’s also our trained rectifier stack builder and he’s capable of deciphering even the most difficult data sheets!
Graduating with a BSc in Microbiology, he went on to study business and management at University. Following a period of work in Industry he went on to achieve an International MBA (Masters in Business Administration). Glen has now achieved a B.Eng Hons in Electronics Engineering to complement his new role within Harmsworth, Townley & Co. Ltd.

Having made this brilliant achievement aged over 50, and also his B.Eng Hons he is keen to show that age is no limitation to pursuing new interests and keeping active. Thank you to everyone
Here at Harmsworth & Townley we take immense pride in our personal service and staff who are willing to go the extra mile (as long as they don’t burn fossil fuels whilst doing so!). We value every helping hand along the way, including some certain little assistants. Every so often, colleagues bring their children into the office – because bringing work and fun together, is something we value.
Family and history are actually central features of Harmsworth, Townley & Co. Glen and Clare’s children have helped in the business at various stages – with Sasha helping out with assembly and Nathan helping to sort out thousands of fasteners. It certainly hasn’t put them off science – the opposite in fact – as they are both now studying it at university!
We also want to thank everyone who has been there for us along the way – staff members present and past, students for work experience, our lovely cleaner Sue and of course… most importantly, you, our customers!
